- had just won two gold medals at the Games,

- Jim was born in Oklahoma in 1888. He
- was part Irish, part French, and part Native
- American. He was a stand-out athlete in
- college at the Carlisle Indian School, in
- Pennsylvania, which he attended because
- of the prejudice against Native Americans
- at many other schools. At Carlisle, Jim
- participated in track, baseball, basketball,
- lacrosse, and wrestling. In all, he lettered
- in 11 sports. At the 1912 Olympics, he
- won the decathlon and the pentathlon,
